Daylight Savings & Holiday Photos: How to Make the Most of Golden Hour

With daylight savings in effect, the days are getting shorter, and golden hour—the magical time just before sunset when natural light is soft, warm, and perfect for photos—arrives earlier each day. At Kate Buckles Photography, we want to help you capture beautiful moments during this special time of year, so here are some tips on planning your evening sessions to take full advantage of daylight savings.

Timing is Everything: Plan for Golden Hour

For the best lighting, evening sessions are ideally scheduled about an hour before sunset, depending on the location. This period, often called the "golden hour," provides a warm, flattering glow and enhances the natural beauty of outdoor photos. As daylight savings shifts sunset times earlier, planning becomes key to making sure your session aligns with the golden hour.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Check Sunset Times: After the daylight savings change, sunset times can be as early as 5:00 PM, so your session might need to be scheduled as early as 4:00 PM or earlier, depending on your location and the time of year.

  • Book Early for Evening Sessions: Our evening sessions tend to book up quickly as everyone wants to capture that perfect light. Make sure to book your spot as soon as possible to ensure you get your preferred time.

How to Prepare for Your Evening Session

Once you've booked your session time, here are a few ways to make sure you're ready to capture beautiful golden hour photos:

  • Arrive Early: Arriving about 5 minutes early is a great way to make the most of your session. This allows us to start right on time and maximize the fleeting minutes of golden hour.

  • Dress for the Light: Warm, earthy colors like burnt orange, mustard, burgundy, and deep greens work beautifully in golden hour lighting. Adding cozy layers like scarves or sweaters will also add texture and warmth to your photos.

  • Bring Any Props or Accessories: If you’d like to incorporate holiday props, like a cozy blanket, small gift boxes, or festive accessories, make sure to bring these along! They add a fun and seasonal element to your photos and work well in the natural evening light.

We recommend planning your session weeks in advance during this busy season to make sure you get your preferred date and time. As the days continue to shorten, evening sessions fill up quickly. Our team at Kate Buckles Photography is here to help you capture the magic of the season with beautiful, timeless photos taken at just the right time of day.

Enjoy this beautiful time of year, and let’s create lasting memories under the golden light of a winter sunset! Book HERE!
