Summer is a gorgeous time for outdoor photo sessions—golden light, blooming landscapes, and a little extra magic in the air. But let’s be real: New Mexico heat doesn’t play around! At Kate Buckles Photography, we want you to feel confident, comfortable, and prepared no matter how high the temperatures climb.

Here are our top tips for staying cool and looking your best during a summer photoshoot:
1. Plan for Early Morning or Golden Hour
The best lighting also happens to be the coolest part of the day! Scheduling your session early in the morning or later in the evening (hello, golden hour!) helps avoid harsh midday sun and keeps things more comfortable for everyone—especially little ones.
2. Dress Smart
Choose light, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen, and steer clear of dark colors that absorb heat. Flowy dresses, rolled sleeves, and natural fibers will help you stay cooler and look great on camera. Pro tip: bring a backup shirt for little ones or anyone who tends to sweat easily—just in case!
3. Stay Hydrated
Bring water for everyone! Even during shorter sessions, staying hydrated makes a big difference in energy and comfort. For kiddos, a cold water bottle or a little spritz fan can be a lifesaver.
4. Bring the Essentials
A few things that go a long way in hot weather:
Small hand towels or blotting papers
Sunscreen (applied ahead of time)
Bug spray (if we're shooting in grassy areas)
A portable fan or cooling towel
Snacks for the kids to keep them happy and motivated
5. Embrace the Summer Vibes
Summer sessions can be playful and carefree—barefoot kids, wildflowers, popsicles at the end of your shoot—these touches make your photos feel personal and seasonal in the best way.
Bottom line: You don’t have to sweat it (literally or figuratively). With a little preparation and the right timing, your summer session can be a breeze—full of sunshine, smiles, and sweet memories.
