How to Mix and Match Outfits for Family Photos

One of the biggest questions we get before a photo session is: “What should we wear—especially with so many people in the picture?” The good news is, you don’t need everyone to wear the exact same outfit. In fact, coordinated looks (instead of matching) make photos feel more natural, timeless, and stylish. Here are some of our favorite tips for mixing and matching family outfits:

1. Start with a Color Palette
Choose 2–3 main colors that work well together. For fall, think warm neutrals like beige, ivory, or taupe paired with a richer accent color like burgundy, mustard, or emerald green. This gives your photos balance without being overwhelming.
2. Use Layers & Textures
Sweaters, scarves, vests, and jackets not only keep you cozy but also add variety and depth to your photos. A mix of denim, knits, and soft fabrics creates visual interest while staying cohesive.
3. Mix Solids with Subtle Patterns
Too many bold patterns can get distracting, but pairing a solid dress with someone else’s plaid shirt, or a neutral sweater with floral accents, makes the group look pulled together without being too busy.
4. Coordinate, Don’t Match
Gone are the days of everyone in white shirts and jeans. Instead, think harmony. If one person wears a burgundy dress, another could wear a mustard sweater, and someone else a cream blouse—different pieces, but the same palette.
5. Add Small Accessories for Personality
Hats, scarves, boots, or jewelry can bring a pop of color or texture that ties the whole group together. These little touches help everyone feel like themselves while still fitting the overall look.
✨ Remember, the goal isn’t perfection—it’s connection. When your family feels comfortable and confident, that joy shines through in your photos!
