Holiday photos are some of the sweetest memories of the year—twinkling lights, festive outfits, cozy hugs, and all the joy this season brings. But let’s be honest… getting kids ready for photos can feel like a whole event of its own.

The good news? With a few simple tricks, your holiday photo session can be smooth, fun, and full of genuine smiles. Here’s how to set your little ones up for success!

šŸŽ 1. Keep It Light and Fun

Kids feed off your energy. If you’re relaxed, they will be too.Instead of saying ā€œWe have to take photos,ā€ try:

  • ā€œWe’re going to meet a fun photographer today!ā€

  • ā€œLet’s go play in front of the Christmas tree!ā€

  • ā€œWe get to have a little adventure together!ā€

The more fun it feels, the more natural their smiles will be.

✨ 2. Make Sure They’re Rested and Fed

It sounds simple, but it makes a huge difference.A quick snack before the session (and one for after!) helps kids stay energized and happy.

Avoid messy snacks right before photos—stick to clean, easy bites like cheese, crackers, or apples.

šŸŽ„ 3. Dress Them Comfortably (and Warm!)

Holiday outfits are adorable, but if kids feel itchy, cold, or uncomfortable, they’ll let you know.

  • Choose soft fabrics

  • Add warm layers

  • Avoid shoes that are new or stiff

  • Bring a cozy jacket for in-between shots

Comfort = cooperation.

šŸ“· 4. Let Them Be Themselves

Some kids beam at the camera.Others are shy, silly, curious, or playful.

All of it is perfect.

The best holiday photos happen when kids get to show their real personalities—hugging you tight, exploring the scene, giggling at a silly joke, or proudly showing off their holiday outfit.

Trust the process. Let them be who they are.

šŸŽ¶ 5. Bring a Happy Distraction

A favorite (quiet) toy, a small treat, or a special surprise for after the session works wonders.

I always recommend:

  • Stickers

  • A small candy cane

  • A jingle bell they can shake

  • A tiny reward for cooperation

Just save the messy treats for after photos!

šŸ•Æļø 6. Arrive a Few Minutes Early

Holiday minis move quickly.Give yourself time to:

  • Park

  • Fix hair bows

  • Remove jackets

  • Take a deep breath

That calm start sets the tone for the entire session.

ā¤ļø 7. Trust Your Photographer

I’ve worked with hundreds of families and know exactly how to bring out the best in little ones—even the shy, spirited, or energetic ones.

Your job is simply to enjoy the moment.I’ll handle the rest.
