What Time of Day Is Best for Family Pictures?

"What time should we schedule our family photos?"

While we can create beautiful photographs throughout the day in certain situations, there's one time that consistently gives us the dreamy, timeless look so many families love.

What Is Golden Hour?

Golden hour is the hour just before sunset (or just after sunrise).

During this time, the sun sits lower in the sky, creating soft, warm light instead of the harsh overhead sunlight we see in the middle of the day.

That softer light is flattering for every skin tone, creates beautiful depth, and allows us to photograph without harsh shadows across your face.

It's one of the biggest reasons outdoor family photos feel warm, natural, and full of emotion.

Can We Only Take Photos at Golden Hour?

While golden hour (the hour before sunset) and early morning light are definitely my favorite times to photograph outdoors, they aren't your only options.

Life is busy! Between work schedules, school, sports, naps, and bedtime routines, I completely understand that sunset isn't always realistic for every family.

The great news is that we can create beautiful images throughout the day—we just have to be a little more intentional about choosing the right location.

Some locations offer gorgeous open shade, tall trees, or natural features that soften the light even in the middle of the day. Others photograph best during sunrise or sunset.
