One of the most common questions I hear from families is:

"What time should we schedule our family photos?"

If you've ever looked at a beautiful family portrait and wondered why it has that soft, glowing, almost magical light...the answer is usually simple:

Lighting.

As photographers, we're constantly chasing beautiful light because it makes an incredible difference in your final images. While we can create beautiful photographs throughout the day in certain situations, there's one time that consistently gives us the dreamy, timeless look so many families love.

It's called golden hour.

What Is Golden Hour?

Golden hour is the hour just before sunset (or just after sunrise).

During this time, the sun sits lower in the sky, creating soft, warm light instead of the harsh overhead sunlight we see in the middle of the day.

That softer light is flattering for every skin tone, creates beautiful depth, and allows us to photograph without harsh shadows across your face.

It's one of the biggest reasons outdoor family photos feel warm, natural, and full of emotion.

Can We Only Take Photos at Golden Hour?

While golden hour (the hour before sunset) and early morning light are definitely my favorite times to photograph outdoors, they aren't your only options.

Life is busy! Between work schedules, school, sports, naps, and bedtime routines, I completely understand that sunset isn't always realistic for every family.

The great news is that we can create beautiful images throughout the day—we just have to be a little more intentional about choosing the right location.

Some locations offer gorgeous open shade, tall trees, or natural features that soften the light even in the middle of the day. Others photograph best during sunrise or sunset. That's one of the reasons I spend so much time helping my clients choose the perfect location. It's not just about finding a pretty backdrop—it's about finding a place that works beautifully for the time of day we're photographing.

If your schedule only allows for a midday session, don't worry! We'll simply choose a location that complements the light and allows us to create beautiful, timeless images. While that dreamy golden-hour glow is always a favorite, beautiful family photographs are possible at many different times of day with thoughtful planning.

One of the biggest advantages of working with an experienced photographer is that you don't have to know which locations work best at different times of day—that's my job! I'll guide you through choosing both the perfect location and the ideal session time based on your family's schedule, the season, and the look you're hoping to achieve.

Whether we're chasing the soft glow of golden hour, taking advantage of the fresh light of an early morning, or selecting a beautiful shaded location for a midday session, my goal is always the same: creating timeless images that tell your family's story.

But What About Little Kids and Bedtimes?

This is probably the biggest concern parents have.

During the summer, sunset can be pretty late, especially here in New Mexico.

If your children normally go to bed early, don't worry—we'll talk through the options together.

Sometimes we choose a location with more shade so we can start a little earlier.

Sometimes morning is actually the better fit.

And sometimes parents are surprised to find that the excitement of a special evening adventure keeps everyone happy right through the session.

Every family is different, and we'll choose a plan that works best for yours.

Does Every Location Have the Same Best Time?

Not at all!

One of the reasons I created my Location Guide is because every location photographs differently.

Some locations are stunning at sunrise.

Others truly shine at sunset.

A few are beautiful almost any time of day because of the surrounding trees or landscape.

When you book with me, you don't have to guess. I'll recommend the best time for your specific location so we can make the most of the light and create images you'll love.

It can feel a little funny scheduling family photos for 7:00 or even 8:00 in the evening during the summer.

I promise there is a reason!

Those last few minutes before sunset often produce the most beautiful light of the entire day. The sky softens, the colors become warmer, and everything feels calm.

It's one of my favorite moments to photograph because families naturally slow down, the temperature is more comfortable, and the light wraps around you in the most beautiful way.

Beautiful Light Makes Beautiful Memories

At the end of the day, choosing the right time isn't about following a photography rule.

It's about creating the best possible experience and giving your family photographs that you'll treasure for years to come.

I'll help guide you through every decision—from choosing the perfect location to selecting the best time of day—so all you have to do is show up and enjoy being together.

That's where the real magic happens.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if we can only do a midday session?

That's okay! Depending on the location, we may be able to find beautiful shaded areas or choose an indoor studio session.

Are sunrise sessions a good option?

Absolutely! Sunrise offers gorgeous light, cooler temperatures, and is often a great fit for families with early-rising little ones.

Do you choose the session time?

Yes! Once we've selected your location, I'll recommend the time that will give us the best light and the best overall experience.

Will the time change throughout the year?

Yes. Sunset changes with the seasons, so session times vary throughout the year to take advantage of the best natural light.
