If you’ve ever hesitated to book family photos because you’re worried your kids won’t “behave”… this post is for you.

Let’s clear something up right away:perfectly posed, perfectly smiling kids are not the goal. Real moments are.

Family in desert setting; woman hugs child in floral dress, man kneels nearby smiling. Mountain and river in background, earthy tones.

Here’s what to know — and what to do — if your kids don’t cooperate during photos:

First: This Is Completely Normal

Kids are kids. They’re curious, energetic, shy, silly, and emotional — sometimes all in the same five minutes. And that’s okay. Some of the most meaningful images come from moments that weren’t planned at all.

I promise: you are not the only parent who worries about this.

1. Release the Pressure (It Helps More Than You Think)

Kids pick up on stress quickly. When parents feel tense or worried about “getting the shot,” kids often respond by shutting down or acting out.

Take a deep breath.Trust the process.Let the moment unfold.

The calmer you are, the more relaxed your kids will be — and that always shows in photos.

2. Let Kids Be Themselves

Some kids are shy. Some are wild. Some warm up slowly. All of it is okay.

I gently guide sessions in a way that allows kids to:

  • Move

  • Explore

  • Snuggle

  • Laugh

  • Take breaks when needed

Those in-between moments? They’re often the best ones.

3. Trust Your Photographer

Handling unpredictable kids is part of the job — and something I have a lot of experience with. Wiggles, wandering, and big feelings are expected.

Your job is simple: love on your kids and enjoy the moment. I’ll take care of capturing it beautifully.

4. Some of the Best Photos Come From “Non-Cooperation”

The giggles after a silly moment. The cuddle when someone needs comfort. The laughter that comes from letting go.

These are the images that feel real — the ones you’ll treasure more as time passes.

5. Remember Why You’re Doing This

You’re not documenting perfection. You’re documenting this season of life.

One day, you’ll look back at these photos and remember how your kids were — not how well they followed directions.

If you’ve been waiting to book photos “until the kids are older” or “more cooperative,” this is your sign: now is the perfect time!
