Preparing for a photo session is exciting—whether it’s family portraits, senior photos, or a milestone session, you want everything to go smoothly. While we always do our best to make sessions relaxed and stress-free, a little preparation can go a long way. One of the best ways to feel confident walking into your shoot is by bringing along a “just in case” bag with a few handy essentials.

Four women stand smiling in a natural setting with trees and shrubs. They're wearing casual dresses and jeans under a cloudy sky.

Here are some great things to pack:

For Everyone

  • Water & Snacks – Hydrated, happy kids (and parents!) always photograph better. Choose non-messy snacks like crackers or fruit snacks.

  • Tissues or Wipes – Perfect for quick clean-ups, especially with little ones.

  • Hair Brush or Comb – Helps tame flyaways and refresh your look if the wind picks up.

  • Extra Hairspray or Bobby Pins – Quick fixes for hairstyles on location.

  • Chapstick or Lip Gloss – Dry lips show up in photos, so this is a small but important touch.

  • Lotion – To smooth out dry hands or knees, especially in cooler months.

For Kids

  • Backup Outfit – Spills, mud, or accidents happen—having a second outfit can be a lifesaver.

  • Favorite Toy or Comfort Item – Something small that makes them feel secure (and can help with smiles if needed).

  • Bribery Snacks/Treats – Sometimes a little reward goes a long way!

For Adults

  • Touch-Up Makeup – Powder to reduce shine, lipstick to refresh your look.

  • Extra Shoes – If your session involves walking, you might want comfy shoes to switch between shots.

For Outdoor Sessions

  • Bug Spray – Especially important for summer evenings.

  • Blanket – Great for sitting poses, keeping kids warm, or just adding a cozy vibe.

  • Weather Items – Small umbrella, jacket, or hand warmers depending on the season.

Bonus Extras

  • Safety Pins or Fashion Tape – Perfect for wardrobe emergencies.

  • Small First Aid Items – Band-aids for little scrapes or blisters.

  • Lint Roller – Helps remove pet hair or fuzz from clothes before photos.

Your photo session should be fun and memorable—not stressful. Packing a small “just in case” bag means you’re ready for anything, and you’ll feel more relaxed knowing you have the little things covered. At Kate Buckles Photography, we’re here to capture your family, and a little preparation makes the experience even smoother.
