Dear Senior Mom,

Can I let you in on a little secret?

Every senior session I photograph has two people I'm celebrating.

Of course, I'm celebrating the incredible young adult standing in front of my camera—the one who's worked hard, grown so much, and is getting ready to step into an exciting new chapter.

But I'm also celebrating you.

Because while this is your senior's milestone...

It's yours too.

You Were There for Every Chapter

Long before the cap and gown.

Long before college tours and graduation announcements.

There was another little backpack.

Tiny shoes that somehow always ended up on the wrong feet.

Lunches packed before school.

Homework at the kitchen table.

Late-night science projects.

Sports practices.

Dance recitals.

Band concerts.

Early mornings.

Late nights.

Countless hugs.

A few tears.

And more proud moments than you could ever count.

You were there through every one of them.

You cheered from the sidelines.

You stayed up waiting for them to get home.

You celebrated the victories and helped carry them through the disappointments.

Whether your child realizes it yet or not, your fingerprints are all over the person they've become.

This Year Feels Different

Senior year has a way of making ordinary moments feel extraordinary.

The last first day of school.

The last football game.

The last choir concert.

The last dance recital.

The last time they'll walk those familiar hallways as a student.

For years, you've been looking ahead to this moment.

And then suddenly...

It's here.

It's exciting.

It's beautiful.

And if you're honest...

It's a little heartbreaking too.

Because while you're incredibly proud of the person they've become, there's a part of you that still sees the little child who reached for your hand on the way into kindergarten.

Give Yourself Permission to Be in This Story

Moms are amazing at documenting everyone else's lives.

You're the one taking the first-day-of-school pictures.

Capturing birthdays.

Recording vacations.

Cheering from the sidelines.

But somehow...

You're often missing from the memories.

Senior pictures are one of the few times I encourage moms to step in front of the camera, even if it's just for a few minutes.

One day, your senior won't care whether your hair was perfect.

They won't notice if you wished you had lost ten pounds first.

They won't remember whether you thought your outfit photographed well.

They'll simply remember that you were there.

And they'll treasure those photographs far more than you can imagine.

One Day, These Pictures Will Mean Even More

Years from now, life will look different.

Your senior will have adventures you can't even imagine yet.

Maybe they'll graduate from college.

Start a career.

Get married.

Become a parent themselves.

And one day, they'll look back at these photographs.

They won't just see who they were.

They'll see you.

The mom who believed in them before they believed in themselves.

The one who drove them to practice, helped with homework, prayed over them, and celebrated every milestone along the way.

Those photographs become part of your family's legacy.

Kate's Tip

If your senior is comfortable with it, I always encourage taking a few photos together.

Not because they're traditional.

Not because they're expected.

But because someday they'll become priceless.

Trust me on this one.

Senior Mom...

Take a deep breath.

Slow down when you can.

Celebrate every milestone.

Cry if you need to.

Laugh often.

Be proud.

This year isn't only about saying goodbye to childhood.

It's also about celebrating everything you did to help your child become the incredible person they are today.

Thank you for trusting me to preserve this season for your family.

It truly is one of the greatest honors of what I get to do.

And I promise...

Years from now, you'll never regret taking the pictures.

You'll only be grateful you took the time to celebrate this beautiful chapter before it became a memory.
