Bringing Props That Tell Your Story: Making Your Senior Session Uniquely You

One of the things I love most about senior photography is that no two sessions are ever the same.
Every senior has a different story to tell.
Some have spent years on the volleyball court or football field. Others have poured countless hours into dance, theater, music, rodeo, FFA, art, robotics, or student leadership. Some are passionate about horses, hiking, books, photography, or the old truck they've been restoring with Dad.
Those passions have shaped who you are, and your senior session is the perfect opportunity to celebrate them.
That's why I always encourage seniors to think about bringing a few meaningful props that help tell their story.
Your Story Is Worth Telling
The best props aren't the fanciest ones.
They're the ones that mean something.
Think about the things that have been part of your life throughout high school.
Maybe it's your varsity letter jacket.
Your soccer ball.
A violin that's traveled with you through countless performances.
A stack of books because reading has always been your favorite escape.
A paintbrush that's covered in years of creativity.
Or maybe it's your first truck, your horse, your fishing pole, or even your dog who's been by your side through it all.
These aren't just "props."
They're pieces of your story.
Years from now, they'll remind you of the hobbies, friendships, passions, and dreams that made your high school years unforgettable.
Some of My Favorite Senior Sessions Include...

Over the years, seniors have brought some incredibly meaningful items to their sessions.
I've photographed:
Sports uniforms and equipment
Dance shoes
Musical instruments
Letter jackets
Cap and gown
Classic cars and trucks
Horses
Dogs
Hunting and fishing gear
Art supplies
Graduation confetti
College acceptance letters
Books
Flowers
Family heirlooms
Every one of those items added something special because they reflected the senior—not because they looked good in a photograph.
Sometimes the simplest ideas become the most meaningful images.
Don't Bring Props Just to Fill the Frame
One thing I always tell seniors is this:
If it doesn't mean something to you...
Leave it at home.
Your gallery shouldn't feel like a Pinterest board.
It should feel like your life.
The goal isn't to bring as many things as possible.
The goal is to include the things that have helped shape who you are.
Sometimes one meaningful item is all we need to create images you'll treasure forever.
We'll Plan It Together

One of the reasons I love getting to know my seniors before their session is because it helps me think creatively about how to incorporate the things that matter most to them.
Maybe we'll photograph your guitar at sunset.
Maybe we'll finish the evening with your horse in a mountain meadow.
Maybe we'll include your jeep, your favorite hiking trail, or your dog running alongside you.
We'll create a plan together so every part of your session feels intentional and personal.
Those thoughtful details are what transform beautiful portraits into meaningful memories.
The Little Details Become the Biggest Memories
Years from now, you probably won't remember every homework assignment or every test you took.
But you'll remember Friday night football games.
Your best friends.
The hours spent practicing your instrument.
The smell of the barn.
The excitement of opening that college acceptance letter.
Those are the moments that deserve to be remembered.
Sometimes one simple prop brings all of those memories rushing back.
Kate's Tip

Not sure what to bring?
Make a list of the activities, hobbies, sports, and people that have made your high school years special.
Then ask yourself:
"If someone looked at these pictures twenty years from now, what would I want them to know about me?"
That's usually where the best ideas come from.
And if you're still not sure, don't worry! I love helping seniors brainstorm meaningful ideas that make their session one of a kind.
Your Senior Session Should Tell Your Story
Senior year is so much more than graduation.
It's years of hard work.
Friendships.
Dreams.
Growth.
And the excitement of stepping into a brand-new chapter.
Your senior session should celebrate all of it.
Whether you bring your favorite guitar, your horse, your volleyball, or simply your incredible smile, my goal is to create photographs that feel authentically you.
Because years from now, these won't just be senior pictures.
They'll be a reminder of who you were, what you loved, and the incredible journey that brought you to this
