There’s just something magical about a freshly swaddled baby.Wrapped up like a little bundle of love, cozy and content—it’s one of the sweetest sights to capture during a newborn session.

At Kate Buckles Photography, I love styling newborns in simple, beautiful swaddles that let their tiny features and peaceful expressions take center stage. Whether you bring your own or use some of my studio favorites, the swaddle you choose can add that perfect soft touch to your gallery.

Here are some of my favorite tips and picks for choosing the perfect swaddle for your baby’s shoot:

Newborn baby peacefully asleep, wrapped in a teal blanket on a soft gray background. The setting is calm and serene.

1. Go Neutral (or Softly Styled)Creams, whites, soft grays, pale blush, and earthy tones always photograph beautifully. These shades keep the focus on your baby, work with any backdrop, and create a timeless look you’ll love forever.

2. Texture Is EverythingA waffle knit, ribbed cotton, gauze muslin, or stretchy jersey adds subtle dimension without being too busy. Texture brings a touch of cozy warmth to the images—plus, stretchy fabrics help us get that snug, sleepy wrap just right!

3. Avoid Distracting PatternsWhile florals and fun prints are adorable in everyday outfits, they can pull focus in photos. Stick with solids or ultra-simple patterns (like a tiny dot or stripe) for that soft, dreamy newborn vibe.

4. Bring One That Feels Like YouIf you have a swaddle that’s special to your family—maybe it was a gift, a sibling’s hand-me-down, or something that matches baby’s nursery—bring it along! Personal touches always add meaning to your photos.

5. Don’t Forget Matching AccessoriesA soft swaddle with a tiny bow, hat, or matching headband? Yes, please. These little add-ons are completely optional, but they add an extra dose of cuteness and polish.

And if you’re not sure what to bring—no worries at all. I have a carefully curated collection of studio swaddles in timeless tones and cozy textures, ready to use at your session.

At the end of the day, your baby is the star of the show. The swaddle is just the finishing touch that helps them feel snug, safe, and photo-ready.
