What Should I Expect During a Newborn Photography Session?

If you've never had professional newborn photos taken before, you might be wondering...
"What will the session actually be like?"
Will my baby sleep?
What if they cry?
What should we bring?
How long will it take?
The good news is that newborn sessions are designed with one very important thing in mind:
Your baby is in charge.
Unlike many other types of photography sessions, newborn photography moves at your little one's pace. There is no rushing, no pressure, and no expectation that everything goes exactly according to plan.
Your Baby Sets the Schedule

Some babies sleep through almost the entire session.
Others want to snack every hour.
Some need extra cuddles.
Some just want to stretch and look around.
Every baby is different, and that's perfectly normal.
We'll pause whenever your baby needs to eat, be changed, or simply be comforted.
Those quiet moments aren't interruptions—they're part of the experience.
A Calm, Relaxed Environment
My goal is for you to feel like you can take a deep breath the moment you walk through the door.
Becoming a new parent is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming.
This session is one place where you don't have to worry about entertaining anyone or keeping everything on schedule.
You simply get to enjoy your baby while I take care of the rest.
Don't Worry If Baby Cries

This is probably the biggest fear new parents have.
Please hear this:
Every newborn cries.
It's how they communicate.
Crying doesn't mean your session isn't going well, and it certainly doesn't mean we won't create beautiful images.
Years of photographing newborns have taught me that patience is one of the most important parts of the process.
There is always time for an extra feeding, a diaper change, or a few minutes in Mom or Dad's arms.
Family Photos Matter Too
While your newborn is the star of the session, I always encourage parents and siblings to be part of the experience.
These first family portraits become incredibly meaningful over the years.
Your baby may never remember those first days at home, but one day they'll see photographs of the way you looked at them, held them, and loved them from the very beginning.
Those are some of my favorite images to create.
What Should You Bring?

The wonderful thing about newborn sessions is that you don't need to pack much.
I recommend bringing:
Extra bottles or feeding supplies if needed.
A pacifier, if your baby uses one.
Extra diapers.
A change of clothes for baby (just in case).
A sentimental item if you'd like to include it, such as a special blanket or heirloom.
Most importantly, bring yourselves and your willingness to slow down for a little while.
Kate's Tip

Don't stress if your baby was awake all night before your session or decides they don't want to sleep.
Some of the sweetest photographs happen during those unexpected moments—a tiny yawn, a curious stretch, or bright little eyes looking up at Mom and Dad.
Your baby's personality is already beginning to shine, and those moments are worth remembering too.
You're Not Expected to Know What to Do
One of the biggest misconceptions about newborn photography is that parents need to know how to prepare or pose their baby.
You don't.
That's my job.
I'll guide you through the entire experience, from planning your session before your baby arrives to gently directing family portraits and creating a calm, relaxed atmosphere throughout your time together.
You don't have to figure anything out on your own.
Ready to Preserve These First Days?

The newborn stage is incredibly short, but the memories last forever.
Whether your baby sleeps through the entire session or spends the morning wide awake taking in the world, we'll create photographs that celebrate exactly who they are in this beautiful season of life.
I'd be honored to help you preserve these first precious memories and create images your family will treasure for generations.
