Tips for When Kids Are Fussy During a Photoshoot

At Kate Buckles Photography, we know that kids can sometimes be unpredictable, especially during a photoshoot. While capturing those delicate moments filled with joy and laughter is our goal, we also understand that children might get fussy. Here are some tips to help ensure a smooth and enjoyable photoshoot experience for everyone.

1. Bring Snacks and Drinks

A hungry or thirsty child can quickly become fussy. Pack some easy-to-eat snacks and water to keep them satisfied and comfortable. Healthy snacks like fruit slices, cheese sticks, or crackers can be lifesavers during a photoshoot.

2. Schedule Around Naptime

Try to schedule your photoshoot at a time when your child is usually well-rested and in a good mood. Avoid times that clash with their usual nap or meal times. A well-rested child is more likely to be cooperative and happy.

3. Bring Their Favorite Toy

Having a favorite toy or comfort item on hand can help soothe a fussy child. It can also be used as a prop in the photos, adding a personal touch to the session. Familiar items can help your child feel more secure and relaxed.

4. Take Breaks

Sometimes kids just need a break. If your child starts to get fussy, don't hesitate to take a short break. Let them run around, play, or just relax for a few minutes. This can help reset their mood and make them more willing to cooperate. This is also a fun time for us to do photos of them playing!

5. Keep It Fun

Make the photoshoot fun and engaging. Play games, tell jokes, and encourage natural interactions. When kids are having fun, their genuine joy and laughter shine through in the photos. Try not to force poses or smiles; candid moments often make the best shots.

6. Be Patient and Flexible

Patience is key when working with kids. If your child is having a tough time, stay calm and positive. Flexibility can make a big difference, so be prepared to adapt your plans. Sometimes the best photos come from unexpected moments.

7. Trust Your Photographer

At Kate Buckles Photography, we have lots of experience working with children. Trust us to guide the session and capture beautiful images, even if things don’t go exactly as planned. We're here to help create a relaxed and enjoyable environment for your family.
