Neutral Tones + Natural Beauty = Timeless Photos

The Rio Rancho Open Space is one of our favorite hidden gems—wide open skies, trees, river and mountain views, and soft golden light that’s simply magic for photos. If you’re planning your session here, your outfit choices can elevate the entire look and feel of your images!

Here’s how to dress to match this serene and natural New Mexico backdrop:

1. Think Soft, Desert-Inspired Colors

The warm tones of the open space call for colors that complement rather than compete. Ideal hues include:

  • Soft neutrals: cream, taupe, sand, and tan

  • Earthy shades: olive, rust, sage, mustard, and terracotta

  • Warm pastels: dusty rose, muted peach, sky blue

Avoid anything too bright or saturated—these tones can clash with the natural surroundings and overpower your photos.

2. Flowy Fabrics Are Your Friend

The occasional Rio Rancho breeze can make flowy dresses, skirts, and light tops come alive! Choose:

  • Maxi dresses with movement

  • Gauzy fabrics or layers

  • Light button-downs for men that can catch the wind just right

It creates beautiful motion and softness in your final gallery.

3. Keep It Casual, Yet Polished

This location leans toward relaxed, nature-inspired styling. Think “Sunday stroll in the desert” rather than formal wear:

  • For women: maxi dresses, layered tops and jeans, cardigans

  • For men: henley shirts, soft chambray, rolled sleeves, desert boots

  • For kids: simple dresses, rompers, linen shirts, or soft knits

4. Footwear That’s Comfortable & Cute

The terrain is natural and sometimes uneven, so leave the heels behind and go with:

  • Sandals, ankle boots, or clean sneakers

  • Cute closed-toe flats for kids

  • Neutral shoes that won’t draw attention away from your outfits

5. Coordinate, Don’t Match

Pick a color palette of 2–4 complementary tones and have everyone wear pieces that fit within that range. This brings a sense of unity without looking too staged.

At Kate Buckles Photography, we believe in helping you feel confident and camera-ready. The Rio Rancho Open Space gives us the ultimate canvas for laid-back, authentic portraits with an elevated, earthy feel—and with the right outfits, your photos will shine.
